Vietnam persists in constructive dialogue with US over new tariff measures
Vietnam has reaffirmed its commitment to a roadmap of constructive exchange and cooperation with the United States following its recent tariff policy shifts, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang has said.
Hang was speaking on July 25 in response to the US Trade Representative's (USTR) decision to impose a new 12.5% tariff on economies under Section 301 investigation, stating the decision does not fully or objectively reflect Vietnam's actual efforts and achievements in preventing, reducing, and eliminating forced labour, including banning the import of products that use forced labour.
"Vietnam strictly prohibits all forms of forced labour and complies with International Labour Organization (ILO) regulations, international treaties, and free trade agreements to which Vietnam is a member," Hang emphasised.
The Government issued Decree No. 292/2026/ND-CP on July 22, 2026, which prohibits the import of goods that are extracted, produced, or manufactured wholly or partly through forced labour.
According to the spokesperson Vietnam will continue to exchange and work with the US in a constructive and cooperative spirit. She requested that the US fully assess the measures Vietnam has implemented to adjust the tariffs applied to Vietnamese goods to reflect the reality as well as its efforts in developing and enforcing legislation.
