US tech giant Thermo Fisher expands semiconductor and biomedical footprint in Hanoi
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung received Gianluca Pettiti, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of US-based Thermo Fisher Scientific, in Hanoi on August 12 to beef up cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and biomedical technologies.
During the meeting, Deputy PM Dung highlighted the government's focus on high-tech sectors, including semiconductors, AI, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing, to improve national productivity and economic competitiveness.
The government welcomes multinational technology groups to deepen their involvement in the domestic ecosystem through research and development, technology transfer, and workforce training, the Deputy PM stated.
In coordination with the National Innovation Center (NIC), Thermo Fisher Scientific is preparing a forum on innovation, AI, and semiconductors. The two sides will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a shared laboratory at NIC for semiconductors, materials science, and biotechnology, directly supporting research, testing, and product development.
Deputy PM Dung requested Thermo Fisher Scientific work closely with NIC, relevant ministries, universities, and research institutes to promptly turn the MoU into practical projects with clear results, prioritizing a shared laboratory at NIC for semiconductor and biomedical technologies to serve research, training, and product development.
Expressing confidence in Vietnam's innovation ecosystem and stable investment environment, Pettiti said that the group desires to accompany and support the country's development goals as it expands regional operations. He added that Thermo Fisher Scientific also wishes to assist Vietnam with forensic and gene-sequencing equipment to support the identification of fallen soldiers' remains.
Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Massachusetts, US, Thermo Fisher Scientific holds a market capitalization of US$219 billion and employs over 125,000 people across more than 50 countries.
Building on its exchanges with NIC, the group is looking to expand its presence and explore long-term investment opportunities in Hanoi, including technology infrastructure, shared laboratory systems, and manufacturing projects in semiconductors and biomedical sciences.
