Can Tho looks to attract greater investment from RoK

Leaders of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho called for stronger investment from the Republic of Korea (RoK) during a working session with a delegation led by Korean Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Jung Jungtae, as the two sides seek to deepen bilateral cooperation in the coming time.

Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Le Quang Tung highlighted vast opportunities for collaboration with Korean partners, particularly in industry, high-tech agriculture, large-scale manufacturing.

He called on the RoK Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to continue serving as a bridge to connect Can Tho with Korean businesses, while also promoting cultural and tourism exchanges and supporting the training of Korean-language teachers for Vietnamese learners.

Cooperation between Can Tho and Korean partners has yielded positive results in recent years, becoming increasingly substantive. The RoK is running 14 projects in Can Tho with total registered capital of around 316 million USD, mainly in processing and manufacturing, trade, services, logistics, real estate and infrastructure. These projects have contributed to job creation, technology transfer and the expansion of the Vietnamese locality’s industrial production value.

For his part, Consul General Jung said Korean firms are keen to invest in Can Tho, especially in infrastructure, education, urban development, smart agriculture and agricultural trade. He proposed the city to organise a dedicated meeting with Korean enterprises to better understand their needs and identify priority areas for future cooperation.

He also revealed that the National Institute of Korean Language plans to launch a training programme for Vietnamese teachers of Korean, adding that the Consulate General will facilitate connections so Can Tho can participate.

The diplomat expressed hope that a direct flight route linking Incheon and Can Tho will be established in the near future.

Trade between Can Tho and the RoK has shown steady growth. In 2025, Can Tho’s exports to the country reached 53.11 million USD, mainly comprising seafood, processed agricultural products, garments and pharmaceuticals, while imports stood at 4.1 million USD, largely raw materials and chemicals.

Business connectivity has been maintained through coordination with Korean associations and enterprises. The city regularly hosts delegations of Korean firms seeking investment opportunities and exploring partnerships in production, trade, logistics and services.

Cultural exchanges and people-to-people diplomacy have also been actively promoted, helping strengthen mutual understanding and friendship. Notable highlights include the annual Vietnam–Korea Cultural Day, social welfare initiatives, and programmes supporting language training and education./.
