Located in North-West Vietnam, Lao Cai is surrounded by Yunna (China) on the north, Lai Chau Province on the west, Ha Giang Province on the east and Yen Bai, Son La provinces on the south.

Natural resources: Lao Cai is rich in mineral resources. Up to now 150 mines with more than 30 types of mineral have been discovered here including the largest and the most quality ones like Apatit in Cam Duong with the reserves of 2.5 billion ton, Quy Xa iron mine with the reserves of 124 million ton, Sin Quyen copper mine with the reserves of 53 million ton, O Quy Ho Molipden mine with the reserves of 154,000 ton. Travel resources: Lao Cai has great potentiality for developing tourism with various types such as convalesce, eco-tourism, trekking, cultural tours, etc. Lao Cai is endowed with many places of interest such as Sa Pa, Bac Ha, Bat Xat, Muong Khuong, etc of which Sa Pa is the most famous one nationwide and in the world.

Traffic: Unlike other mountainous provinces, the province’s has a various transportation network including roadway, railway, and waterway. Now there are 4 national highways running through the province with the total length of 356km (National highways No. 70, 4D, 4E, 279). Hanoi-Lao Cai Highway with 264km length and 4 lines was constructed in 4/2009 and estimated be to completed in 2012. It will reduce the time spent to travel from Hanoi to Lao Cai to 3 hours. Power system: National grid was covered 100% units. Moreover, 68 electricity projects with the total capacity of 882MW were invested.

Water system: Clean water system was installation in all districts and city of the province.

Post and Telecommunication Systems: There are 57 optical fibers, 30 microwaves lines and 170 BTS stations in the province. The landline telephone density is 32/100 people. The number of Internet account is 11,900, in which there are 5,672 broadband accounts

GDP growth rate 2021: 5.33%

Up to now, Lao Cai has 32 FDI projects with the total investment capital is nearly 582 million US dollars.
